We tried fish fingers, mochar chop, luchi aloo dum and a thali at Kolkata Beckons, a Bengali restaurant in Singapore’s Little India. The meal moved from crisp, shareable starters to familiar Bengali combinations, with the thali bringing several dishes together on one platter.

Fish fingers and mochar chop to start at Kolkata Beckons
The fish fingers arrived golden and crumb-coated, arranged on a banana leaf with sliced onion and a dip. They made an easy starter to share before we moved on to the Bengali snacks.
The mochar chop was a more region-specific choice. “Mocha” means banana flower, and Kolkata Beckons describes its chop as banana flower cooked with coconut and herbs, crumb-fried and served with kasundi. Its crisp coating and round shape made it look like a cutlet, but the banana-flower filling sets it apart.
Luchi aloo dum, a Bengali pairing
We also ordered luchi aloo dum at Kolkata Beckons. Luchi is a puffed fried bread; aloo dum is spiced potato curry. Together, they’re a classic Bengali pairing, with the luchi ready to scoop up the curry.

It’s a satisfying option to order alongside the starters, especially if you want to try a familiar combination rather than choose only individual snacks. The restaurant lists luchi and alur dum on its menu; check how the dish is served when you visit.
A thali with plenty to eat
The Bengali thali gave us a little of several things on one platter: rice, dal, vegetables, curry and crisp accompaniments. It offered variety in a single order and balanced the separate starters and luchi aloo dum.
For anyone new to Bengali food, a thali can be a useful way to explore a meal’s range. Here, it rounded out our spread with rice and sides alongside the more immediately recognisable fried snacks.
