Bored on an empty weekend, we explored the possibilities of making a 2-3 hour trip from Hyderabad. After exploring our options, we decided to travel to Bidar to learn more about its historical and cultural background. Then, we packed our things and left early in the morning.
Historical facts about The Bahmani Tombs
The Bahmani tombs act as the final resting place for several notable Bahmani sultans and their family. The tombs built in the 15th and 16th centuries, during the reign of Muslim Bahmani sultans. Bahmani sultans ruled parts of central and southern India. The tombs are in Ashtoor near to the town of Bidar, served as the Bahmani sultanate’s centre of power from 1427 until 1538.
In 1347, Alauddin Bahman Shah of the Delhi Sultanate formed the Bahmani sultanate. The Bahmani sultans ruled the throne in Gulbarga. Their power lasted for over 200 years. Therefore, they constituted a strong dynasty. The Bahmani sultans built several mosques, tombs, and forts. They were passionate lovers of fine art and architecture.
The first five Bahmani sultans’ tombs are within the complex of 12 Bahmani memorials. The tombs are a significant historical landmark that serve as a reminder of the Bahmani sultanate’s rich culture and history. The tombs are a well-known tourist attraction which draws tourists from various places in India.

Architecture of The Bahmani Tombs
The Bahmani Sultanate, a Muslim dynasty that ruled over a large portion of southern India from the 14th to the 16th centuries, built the structures during the 15th and 16th centuries. The tombs are stunning representations of Indo-Islamic architecture, which blends Hindu and Islamic architectural elements.
The tombs contain square layouts with domes on top. Furthermore, Sandstone walls with elaborate carvings decorate the interior. The tombs are situated in a maintained area and are surrounded by gardens. Additionally, the gardens are designed to provide a peaceful and serene setting.
The Sultan Muhammad Shah III’s tomb is the most well-known of the Bahmani tombs. The tomb is a two-story monument with an interesting dome. Artistic carvings, such as geometric designs, floral themes, and Quranic words, decorate the exterior of the tomb. The tomb’s inside is decorated with calligraphy and art.
Things we enjoyed on the way to bidar
We left on our journey at around 10 in the morning, travelling firstly via the Nehru Outer Ring Road and then took exit to the Nallagandala Tellapur Road . Onto NH 65, which was a smooth and pleasant drive after that, was where we continued. We made good time heading towards Zaheerabad as to the excellent condition of the roads. However, we noticed that the road conditions deteriorate as we got closer to the Zaheerabad-Bidar Road. Despite this, we believed the route was appropriate so we took caution to avoid any potholes or rough areas. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery and the cold air that travelled with us on the trip.
Food on the way to Bidar
On the way, we were thirsty and wanted for something refreshing to drink as we make our journey towards Bidar on a hot summer day. Fortunately, we come across many shops selling sugarcane juice along the road. We didn’t think twice before stopping and drinking the tasty and refreshing beverage. A nice treat, the sugarcane juice not only hydrated our thirst but also provided us a boost of energy that kept us going for the remainder of the trip. We amazed at the greenery and beautiful views as we travelled further and enjoyed the beautiful sights of the area.
We noticed that food options alongside the road were limited as we made the journey to Bidar. Therefore, Its better to carry snacks along with you.
Different Tombs in The Bahmani Tombs
The Bahmani Tombs are a group of several tombs, each of which displays a unique architectural style and historical significance. Firstly, The tomb of Alauddin Hasan Bahman Shah, who established the Bahmani Sultanate, is a prominent symbol of his powerful rule. Secondly, The tomb of Ahmad Shah I, famous for its outstanding design and detailed finishing, takes visitors back in time to a period of great artistic achievement. The tomb of Humayun Shah, which is remarkable due to its exquisite domes and lavish embellishments, is next to reveal an amalgamation of Persian and Indian structures.
Furthermore, The tomb of Fathullah Imad-ul-Mulk, which is next to the way, constitutes with its majestic exterior and appealing interior. Things to carry while traveling to Bidar

Parking at the Bahmani Tombs
All days of the week, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the Bahmani Tombs are open. At 5:30 PM, the last entry occurs. The tomb is open to visitors without fee.
There are no designated parking spaces. However there is a place close to the Bahmani tombs’ entrance. Small and subject to crowding, particularly on weekends and holidays. It is advised to arrive early to get a parking space if you intend to see the tombs during peak hours.
You will have to walk a short distance to get to the tombs’ entrance once you’ve parked your car.
The Bahmani tombs are a stunning and significant location. They are definitely worth a trip. The best times to see the tombs are early in the morning when it is cooler. Especially on weekends and holidays, the tombs might become crowded during the day.

By Road
If you’d prefer to take the bus, the early morning service departs at 5 am and offers an AC sleeper experience for a 2-hour trip for about 1500 rupees. As an alternative, you may schedule outstation cab to bring you to the Tomb.
By Rail
The Tombs stands in close proximity to the railway station, requiring a mere 20-minutes journey from there. Trains from Hyderabad commence as early as 4:30 am, with the last train departing around 10:30 pm. Therefore, you have the flexibility to book a train based on your convenience. The train journey from Hyderabad to the bidar takes approximately 3 hours.
By Air
If you decide to choose a flight as your mode of transportation, then the airport is situated 10km from the tomb, ensuring easy accessibility.
